‘GREAT’… Guitar Repair, Evaluation and Technology

Hey, it sounds pretty good huh?  It’s not really a thing here at Solo, I just made it up, but it does tell you what this month’s blog is about.  Happy February everyone!  If anyone puts any stock into the whole groundhog thing, I think this year is providing enough proof to forget all that shadow stuff.  What I will say though, is this winter is cold enough that I have needed my furnace a lot more, and with it being so dry, I have had to monitor my instruments a bit closer than in previous years …. That might be a hint to check your humidity in your house and make sure your guitars are not suffering undue dryness.

Anyway…on to service.  From the early days of Solo, a bonified service department has always been part of the ultimate plan.  We have tried various people, and have advertised to some degree, but like any business, a service department must start with good techs and be nurtured along, to grow and develop plus more importantly, earn a good reputation.  We got part of the way there with Pad when he was around.  For any of you that had service done by Pad, you know the effort he put into every instrument, the quality of his work and his infinite knowledge of electronics and pickups.  Sadly, like so many people in the GTA, logistics became too much of a burden and it was taking him far too long to get to work, so he had to move on.  Before he did, however, he recommended another gentleman named Steve for the service position.

Now if you’ve been into the store in the past while, and noticed this interesting character huddled over the repair bench, dressed in shorts and a t-shirt despite it being minus 1000 outside …. then you have noticed Steve.  And, if you have spoken to him, you may or may not have born witness to his unique sense of humor.  What is more important than all that is if you have had something in for repair, you will have noticed a very high standard as far as quality of work, attention to detail and overall knowledge of the guitar or bass as an instrument.  In fact, I would bring stuff to Steve myself for repair…and I’m a tech of many years plus a guitar builder.  If I have said it once, I have said a million times to find the guy or girl who does the best job of whatever you need done.  When it comes to guitars, Steve is that guy.

In the short time he has been with us here at Solo, Steve has increased the amount of guitar repairs coming through the door for repair to the extent that we have had to hire Alex…someone we want to be able to call Little Steve, or maybe Steve Jr, or Steve Light or well, you get the picture.  Alex is a great tech in his own right and is working with Steve to create a cohesive service department, so that regardless who works on your guitar or bass, you will get the same quality of work and attention to detail …. And hopefully with Alex’s help, you will also have a short turnover to get your instrument back quickly.

Go visit the website www.sologuitars.com, and scan to the very bottom of the home page, you will see a link to Tech Services under the Informational Links heading.  Here you will find our hourly rates and a wide selection of repair services and prices that both Steve and Alex will look after for you. You know, it makes perfect sense that the store with the most parts and tools would have a really great service department.  We kinda think we have that now.  Come in and have a quick chat with either Steve or Alex at Solo Guitars, and if you can’t come in, check out our price schedule while you are looking for parts and accessories at Solo Guitars….I’m pretty certain you won’t be disappointed with our selection or with our services!
