Jescar Fret Wire

Hey Solo fans…as I am writing this we are stepping into the first heatwave of the 2024 summer….make sure you look after your stringed instruments … ensure they are humidified and that the strings are slack when you aren’t playing.  The heat and humidity can have negative effects on your instruments.

So, we are looking at guitar/bass necks this month and next and the parts that actually make them do what they do.  This month, it’s frets. Yeah those pesky little metal things that do everything from intonating your guitar to slicing up your fingers when your guitar has shrunk and developed fret-sprout.

A lot of the options with fret wire are based on your playing style, the style of the guitar and the metal used for the frets.  Fender electrics lean to the medium jumbo frets where Gibsons go jumbo (wide flat) as an example, and we get used to how these guitars feel in our hands.  This determines often what we want in a fret.  If you have a very light touch like a classical player, or if you grab the neck like you’re choking it also has an affect on what you like or use. Your style may also affect the intonation of your instrument depending on the fret profile you use.   Finally, the material plays an important role.  Once upon a time, frets were made of brass, but that has given way to the modern standard which is 18% nickel silver or as some call it ‘German Silver’.  Some companies and builders have also migrated to stainless steel for the hardness.  Yes, they all sound slightly different, although I personally doubt you would notice unless the change you make is drastic.

We are super excited at Solo Guitars to be offering a new product, which is Jescar Fret Wire. Jescar has been evaluating the market and the products available for a long time (30+ years), and we now carry their selection of high-end fret wire.  Why Jescar you ask?  Well there are a lot of reasons.  As they say themselves, when properly installed, the fret wire on your instrument is the gateway between you and your instrument, and by extension, the sound and quality of music you play.  Extreme tolerances (=/- 0.002”), consistency and quality control of fret shape and barbs, superfinish surface quality, dedication to customer support and the availability of 3 materials….18% nickel/silver, Stainless Steel and their own Gold EVOgold. Add to that certain products are available in 24” lengths to prevent the twisting which can occur in coils and the specific stainless steel alloy they have chosen for superior fret life, ease of bending and installation ease.

We feel that Jescar has one of the best selections of fret wire on the market and that based on quality, they are very competitive as far as price and value.  Check out the Solo Guitars website and take a look at the profiles we are offering and whether you do your own fretting or job it out, try Jescar.  We are certain the cutting, installing and levelling of Jescar will exceed many of the products you may be used to.  Their promise is that Jescar Fretwire will improve the tone and playability of your guitar!
